Battery management systems are critical to maintaining the safety and longevity of energy storage in solar installations, but traditional approaches require extensive wiring, expensive hardware, cooling systems, and continuous on-site maintenance. Researchers have developed a Cloud Integrated Battery Management System (CIBMS) that addresses these limitations by shifting monitoring and control functions to the cloud while using IoT sensors to collect real-time battery data.
The system employs Support Vector Regression, a machine learning algorithm, to analyze battery characteristics and predict two key metrics: State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH). Testing on lead-acid batteries demonstrated prediction accuracy exceeding 99% for SOC and SOH values across a wide operational range. The platform stores historical and real-time data on Amazon Web Services cloud infrastructure, enabling remote monitoring without local hardware overhead.
By centralizing management in the cloud, the CIBMS reduces capital expenditure on infrastructure while improving operational visibility. The machine learning models automatically detect battery age, identify potential faults, and recommend maintenance schedules before failures occur. This predictive capability extends battery lifespan and prevents unexpected downtime in solar installations.
The system also optimizes charging from solar PV arrays and manages discharge rates to protect battery integrity. Sensors continuously transmit measurements to cloud databases, where sophisticated algorithms process the data in real time. This enables dynamic adjustments to charging profiles based on solar availability, weather forecasts, and load demand.
While the prototype was tested in a laboratory setting on lead-acid batteries, the architecture is scalable to larger installations and compatible with modern lithium-ion battery chemistries. The approach demonstrates how cloud computing and machine learning can modernize renewable energy systems, reducing operational complexity while enhancing safety and performance. As solar installations grow larger and more distributed, cloud-based battery management offers a practical pathway to reducing maintenance costs and improving grid reliability.
