Solar photovoltaic systems typically use fixed tilt angles and azimuth orientations throughout the year, missing the seasonal shifts in solar geometry that occur in most locations. A new study combining open-source modeling tools—OSM-MEPS and PVLIB—quantifies the real-world impact of adjusting panel orientation monthly across four diverse sites: Serres in Greece, Adelaide in Australia, Njagu in Kenya, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
Researchers performed exhaustive brute-force optimization to find the best monthly and annual fixed orientations at each location, then compared findings against established latitude-based correlations. The Luque et al. formula emerged as the most accurate predictor of optimal tilt angles, with mean absolute error of just 1.87 degrees. Statistical testing using repeated-measures ANOVA confirmed that tilt-azimuth orientation significantly influences monthly energy output, accounting for 41–79% of yield variance after accounting for seasonal factors. Monthly optimal orientations delivered meaningfully better performance than fixed settings, with effect sizes exceeding industry standards.
Interestingly, existing installations at three of four sites already approximated annual optima well, suggesting many real-world systems have been reasonably positioned. Cross-validation between the two modeling platforms showed near-perfect agreement (correlation >0.99), strengthening confidence in the results.
A financial appraisal using South Africa's 2025–2026 feed-in tariff framework reveals carport-mounted PV systems ranging 115–346 kW achieve internal rates of return between 12.2% and 13.4%, with positive net present values reaching R1.3 million. The integrated methodology—combining orientation optimization, statistical rigor, financial modeling and ramp-rate analysis—offers solar developers and utilities a comprehensive toolkit for system design and operational planning. As grid operators seek to maximize distributed solar output and improve project economics, orientation optimization emerges as a straightforward, data-backed strategy.
